Valentine's Day

 Hi friends....

Do you ever heard about Valentine's Day!!!! or did you know the meaning of I LOVE YOU !!!  Sorry Sorry... I know I know.....am just kidding.. take it easy dear......Let me tell you a story about our Valentine's day.....Are you ready????

Okay then am coming to the point

Saint Valentine's Day, commonly shortened to Valentine's Day, is an annual holiday held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions.

St. Valentine's Story

Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome during the third century. That was long, long ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn't like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn't the only one! A lot of people shared my feelings.

Claudius wanted to have a big army. He expected men to volunteer to join. Many men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you might have guessed, not many men signed up. This made Claudius furious. So what happened? He had a crazy idea. He thought that if men were not married, they would not mind joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel. I thought it was preposterous! I certainly wasn't going to support that law!

Did I mention that I was a priest? One of my favourite activities was to marry couples. Even after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies -- secretly, of course. It was really quite exciting. Imagine a small candlelit room with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the while for the steps of soldiers.

One night, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I was marrying escaped in time. I was caught. (Not quite as light on my feet as I used to be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.

I tried to stay cheerful. And do you know what? Wonderful things happened. Many young people came to the jail to visit me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, too, believed in love.

One of these young people was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to visit me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and talk for hours. She helped me to keep my spirits up. She agreed that I did the right thing by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a little note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, "Love from your Valentine."

I believe that note started the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine's Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D. Now, every year on this day, people remember. But most importantly, they think about love and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they remember how he tried to stand in the way of love, and they laugh -- because they know that love can't be beaten!

Hey do you want to express your emotions, here we have best way, let me share our valentine's  dress code.....

cookerySHOW !!!!! Awesome

Hey guys!!!!!

Last week on 20th ,January 2012, Friday My  Team and I were part of a very special and unique evening: we had to cook and plate a 5-course menu for 6 members. The cooking competition was an over all fun experience and awesome. We had 4 teams and the menu is like it starts with Welcome Drink, Stuffed Biriyani, Side dish, Salad and Desert. I had to write the post while my emotions were still together and was eager  waiting to share photos.

Did i say just awesome? Ok.. think awesome as in amazingly awesome!

I have to tell you. This event  started at 5 PM and we have to make 5 dishes and have to finish before 7.30Pm and in each team we were 6 members.I don't have words to demonstrate because at night, even the lights were so dim and we enjoyed all over.

We planned very well and decided our menu which follows like this welcome drink: watermelon aqua fresc, Biriyani: Vegetable stuffed Biriyani, Side dish: Raita, Salad:spicy  pine apple and last but not the least one our Desert: Gagar ka halwa( carrot halwa).

All teams  finished in time. Each team had some problems in dishes, like less salt, a lot of spiciness  and all.....Atlast ours Gagar ka halwa got special attention on it......every one had halwa and asked recipe.

Now the results were announced and we did'nt  expect that , because all teams had done excellently with their own style..... but we got the CROWN  ha ha.

I thank my team  all so much for their incredible talent and very hard work. Plus it was so easy to work with  all of our team, were so cooperative throughout the entire process.

New Year ? Why does the new year begin on January 1? Do you know?

January 1 is a logical day for New Years Day. It closely follows the December solstice in the northern hemisphere, the shortest day of the year

The date of New Year’s Day seems so fundamental that it’s almost as though nature ordained it. But New Year’s Day is a civil event. Its date is not precisely fixed by a seasonal marker.
Our modern celebration of New Year’s Day stems from an ancient Roman custom, the feast of the Roman god Janus – god of doorways and beginnings. The name for the month of January also comes from Janus, who was depicted as having two faces – one looking back into the past, and the other peering forward to the future.

January 1 is a logical day for new beginnings. At the December solstice in the northern hemisphere, we have the shortest day of the year. By January 1, the days are obviously lengthening again. This return of longer hours of daylight had a profound effect on cultures that were tied to agricultural cycles. It has an emotional effect on people even in cities today.
The early calendar-makers didn’t know it, but today we know there is another bit of astronomical logic behind beginning the year on January 1. Earth is always closest to the sun in its yearly orbit around this time.
Earth is closest to the sun for 2012 on January 5

People didn’t always celebrate the new year on January 1. The earliest recording of a new year celebration is believed to have been in Mesopotamia, c. 2000 B.C. That celebration – and many other ancient celebrations of the new year following it – were celebrated around the time of the vernal equinox, around March 20. Meanwhile, the ancient Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Persians began their new year with the autumnal equinox around September 20. And the ancient Greeks celebrated on the winter solstice, around December 20.
By the Middle Ages, though, in many places the new year began in March. Around the 16th century, a movement developed to restore January 1 as New Year’s Day. In the New Style or Gregorian calendar, the New Year begins on the first of January.

Laughing Buddha ???????? ha ha ha........

The statue of the Laughing Buddha, Hotei, carrying a linen sack is a familiar figure, however hardly anyone knows of him except the fact that he signifies contentment and abundance.

Here is a Zen story regarding him.

Hotei, one of the seven Lucky Gods in Japan lived in the T'ang dynasty. He had the least desire to be acknowledged as a Zen master and did not entertain a gathering around him as disciples. Hotei, instead walked his way of life, walking the streets with a sack of candy, fruits or doughnuts that he distributed to children who gathered around him to play.
He even established a kindergarten of the streets.

It was customary of him to extend his hand for a penny when ever he met a Zen follower .

Once when Hotei was about to play-work , another Zen master encountered him and inquired : "What is the significance of Zen?".

Hotei immediately dropped the sack that he was carrying on the floor without a word.

The Zen master asked "What is the actualization of Zen?"

Hotei, the laughing Buddha, swung the bag over his shoulders and continued to go his way.

The celestial Buddha named Hotei or Pu-Tai is best known as the jolly Laughing Buddha. In China, he is known as the Loving or Friendly One. He is based on an eccentric Chinese Ch'an (Zen) monk who lived over 1,000 years ago and has become a significant part of Buddhist and Shinto culture. Because of this monk's benevolent nature, he came to be regarded as an incarnation of the bodhisattva who will be Maitreya (the Future Buddha). His large protruding stomach and jolly smile have given him the common designation "Laughing Buddha."

The Laughing Buddha's image graces many temples, restaurants, and amulets, as he has become a deity of contentment and abundance. The image of Hotei is almost always seen carrying a cloth or linen sack (that which never empties) which is filled with many precious items, including rice plants (indicating wealth), candy for children, food, or the woes of the world. He is patron of the weak, poor and children.

Laughing Buddha statues depict a stout, smiling or laughing bald man in robes with a largely exposed pot belly stomach, which symbolizes happiness, good luck, and plenitude. Some sculpture has small children at his feet. Another item that is usually seen with the Laughing Buddha figure is a begging bowl to represent his Buddhist nature.

In some scenes the Laughing Buddha may be found sitting on a cart drawn by boys, or wielding a fan called an oogi (said to be a "wish giving" fan -- in the distant past, this type of fan was used by the aristocracy to indicate to vassals that their requests would be granted). All of these images display Hotei as a wandering monk who goes around and takes the sadness from people of this world.

According to legend, if one rubs the Laughing Buddha's great belly, it brings forth wealth, good luck, and prosperity. Hotei is also referred to as the patron saint of restaurateurs, fortunetellers and bartenders. When one overeats or over drinks, friends jokingly attribute it to the Laughing Buddha's influence.

THE BOY AND APPLE TREE

 A Moral story

Long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it everyday. He climbed to the treetop, ate the apples, and took a nap under the shadow. He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. Time went by, the little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree every day.

One day, the boy came back to the tree and he looked sad.
"Come and play with me", the tree asked the boy.
"I am no longer a kid, I do not play around trees anymore"
the boy replied.
"I want toys. I need money to buy them."
"Sorry, but I do not have money, but you can pick all my apples
and sell them. So, you will have money."

The boy was so excited. He grabbed all the apples on the tree and
left happily. The boy never came back after he picked the apples.

The tree was sad.
One day, the boy who now turned into a man returned and the tree was excited.
"Come and play with me" the tree said.
"I do not have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter.
Can you help me?"
"Sorry, but I do not have any house. But you can chop off my branches to build your house." So the
man cut all the branches of the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the
man never came back since then.

The tree was again lonely and sad.
One hot summer day, the man returned and the tree was delighted.
"Come and play with me!" the tree said.
"I am getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?" said the man.
"Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy."
So the man cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never showed up for a long time.

Finally, the man returned after many years.
"Sorry, my boy. But I do not have anything for you
anymore. No more apples for you", the tree said.
"No problem, I do not have any teeth to bite" the man replied.
"No more trunk for you to climb on." "I am too old for that now" the man said.
"I really cannot give you anything, the only thing left is my dying roots," the tree said with tears.

"I do not need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years," the man replied. "Good! Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and rest, come sit down with me and rest."

The man sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears.

This is a story of everyone. The tree is like our parents. When we were young, we loved to play with our Mum and Dad. When we grow up, we leave them; only come to them when we need something or when we are in trouble. No matter what, parents will always be there and give everything they could just to make you happy.
You may think the boy is cruel to the tree, but that is how all of us treat our parents. We take them for granted; we don’t appreciate all they do for us, until it’s too late.
